What Is Ghost Flushing?

Ghost flushing, also known as phantom flushing, occurs when your toilet flushes on its own. In other words, it’s a phenomenon where a toilet flushes unexpectedly, even when no one is using it. This is a common toilet problem that not only wastes a lot of water, but it’s also annoying. Keep reading to learn more about ghost flushing, what causes the problem, and how you can fix it.

What Causes Ghost Flushing?

As a homeowner, it’s important to understand the root causes of ghost flushing in order to effectively address and prevent the problem. Here are the common causes of ghost flushing:

  • A Damaged Flapper

A toilet flapper drains water from the tank into the bowl when you flush. A properly functioning flapper sits tightly against the opening when the toilet is not being flushed. If it’s damaged, it won’t create the tight seal that is essential for preventing water from flowing into the bowl. This will cause water to drain into the bowl even when no one is using the toilet.

Thankfully, replacing a toilet flapper is a relatively simple DIY task. This is how to do it—unhook the lift chain from the flush handle lever. Then, remove the flapper from the overflow tube by sliding it off the pegs or removing the ring. Slide the new flapper onto the overflow tube's pegs or secure it with the ring. Reattach the lift chain to the flush handle lever. If you need help, reach out to a nearby plumbing service.

  • Faulty Fill Valve

A fill valve replenishes the tank after each flush by opening the supply pipe when water is below a certain level. As the water level rises in the toilet tank, the float ascents until it reaches a predetermined height, thereby triggering the valve to close. If the fill valve malfunctions, the tan will fill continuously or intermittently, which can lead to ghost flushing.

How to Replace a Fill Valve

  • Loosen the nut connecting the water supply line to the fill valve using pliers or an adjustable wrench.
  • Loosen and remove the nut holding the fill valve in place. The entire assembly should come out.
  • Insert the new fill valve into the tank opening and tighten the mounting nut.
  • Attach the water supply line to the new fill valve.
  • Turn on the water supply and flush the toilet to ensure proper operation.

While replacing a fill valve is a DIY-friendly task, if you're uncomfortable with plumbing work, it's advisable to call a professional plumbing service.

  • Chain Issues

If the chain connected to the flapper is too tight or too loose, it can prevent the flapper from sealing properly, leading to ghost flushing. To adjust the flapper chain, find where it connects to the flapper and flush handle lever. Move the chain clip up a link for a tighter fit or move the chain clip down a link for a looser fit.
