Toilet Troubles? Here’s What’s Causing That Leak

Is there water pooling around the base of the toilet? Does your toilet sound like it’s always running, even when not in use? These are sure signs of a leaky toilet. Toilet leaks are more common in homes than most people realize. A leaky toilet can waste more than 30 gallons of water per day. That’s why it’s important to schedule toilet repair as soon as you notice signs of a leak.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing has been repairing malfunctioning toilets for over 50 years, so we understand all kinds of toilet troubles inside and out. From leaks to clogs, continuous running, broken flush handles, and unusual noises, we’ve got you covered. Whenever you need water leak repair, we are the plumbers in Muncie, IN you can count on to do a great job.

Leaks Between the Tank and the Bowl

If you notice water dripping from the bottom of the tank or pooling behind the toilet, the issue could be a faulty tank-to-bowl gasket. This rubber seal connects the two parts and can wear out over time. Loose or corroded bolts that hold the tank in place can also lead to leaks. If tightening doesn’t help, replace the gasket.

Worn-Out Flapper Valve

One of the most common internal leaks occurs when the flapper becomes worn, warped, or misaligned. A faulty flapper results in a situation where water constantly seeps from the tank into the bowl. This causes the fill valve to keep refilling the tank. This not only wastes water but may also create a phantom flushing sound.

Quick Fix: Drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank and wait 10–15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is likely leaking.

Loose or Leaking Water Supply Line

The water supply line connects your toilet tank to the home’s plumbing system. Over time, the fittings can loosen, or the flexible hose can crack or degrade. If you see dripping water from the line or around the shutoff valve, this may be your leak source. Call a local plumber to replace the hose or tighten the connections to solve the problem.

Wax Ring Failure at the Base

If you find water collecting around the base of your toilet, the wax ring seal between the toilet and the floor may be to blame. This seal prevents wastewater and odors from escaping. A loose wax ring can cause water to seep out, thereby damaging floors and subflooring. This type of leak requires removing the toilet and replacing the wax ring—best handled by a professional plumber.

Cracks in the Bowl or Tank

Though less common, toilets can develop small cracks in the porcelain that allow water to leak. These may be hard to spot but can lead to slow leaks and structural weakening. If you see dampness on the outside of the tank or bowl without an obvious cause, check carefully for hairline cracks.

Overflow Tube Issues

The overflow tube inside the tank prevents water from spilling out when the fill valve malfunctions. If the water level is set too high, it will constantly drain into the overflow tube, wasting water. The common solution to this issue is to adjust the float or fill valve.
